If Your Dreams are too Small then Give them to God. Recovery Comedian Rob Wilfong

Rob Wilfong is a Cincinnati funnyman who has spent the last several years traveling throughout the Midwest working in bars, lodge shows, theaters, and clubs crafting a comedy act that is pleasantly different from anything in the comedy industry today. Rob’s act has been described as “hilariously vaudevillian-like“. High energy antics and quick hits are trademarks of this experienced character-based comic.

Recovery Comedy:  What were you like as a kid?

Rob Wilfong:  Freckles, buck-teeth, with a cowlick and an obsession with Bugs Bunny. I was an honorary member of the Partridge Family Fan Club. You probably didn’t need to know that.

Recovery Comedy:  What made you decide to become a stand-up comedian and how long have you been performing?

Rob Wilfong:  I would always watch late night talk shows if I knew there was a comedian on the show. Mom didn’t care much for that on a school night. Although I started doing stand-up in the military placing in several contests, I let life problems and alcoholism steer me away from my passion for years. I have been working in comedy for over 5 years now.

Recovery Comedy:  Were you performing stand-up comedy before you got into recovery?

Rob Wilfong:  Yes, but not professionally. I guess giving all those leads paid off……..saved me some serious money on Toastmasters. I have enough meetings to go to.

Recovery Comedy:  Does your comedy have a message and if so what is it?

Rob Wilfong:  I have no point to make any more. I’m just having a lot of fun with the audience. Life is good.

Recovery Comedy:  How would you describe your comedy style?

Rob Wilfong:  I’m ridiculous fun!! A character comic with high energy antics and quick hits that keep coming. I want you to feel much better than you did before the show.

Recovery Comedy:  Who are your comedy idols?

Rob Wilfong:  Robin Williams, Emo Philips, and Steven Wright.

Recovery Comedy:  Where does your inspiration for material come from?

Rob Wilfong:  I have learned to embrace my childish outlook on just about everything. It is my sole intent to out-stupid myself.

Recovery Comedy:  What is your joke writing process?

Rob Wilfong:  I heckle the television. It’s incapable of resentment.
Recovery Comedy:  What is your kryptonite?

Rob Wilfong:  Cheese fries…….it’s a real problem.

Recovery Comedy:  Is your family supportive of your comedy career?

Rob Wilfong:  My mom is very religious and has not come to a show. She’s very cool……..just not that way. I remember telling my dad I wanted to be a comedian when I was about ten years old. He said, “Just what the world needs…..”. I know that, if he was alive today, he would get a big kick out of what I’m doing.

Recovery Comedy:  Is comedy part of your healing process?

Rob Wilfong:  Very much so. For the longest time, I didn’t have a computer or barely left the house. I have grown tremendously. Gratitude.

Recovery Comedy:  What was your worst experience performing comedy?

Rob Wilfong:  Early on………every bit of…….…early on. I wasn’t very funny. This takes a ton of work and experience. For once, I am thankful to be obsessive.

Recovery Comedy:  What was your best experience performing comedy?

Rob Wilfong:  The answer is always the same. The last show I performed.

Recovery Comedy:  What is your favorite joke?

Rob Wilfong:  Told my friend I had to go to a funeral. He said, “Anyone you know?”
“No. I have season tickets, dummy.”

Recovery Comedy:  What is your comedy dream?

Rob Wilfong:  I think way too small. I have given my dreams to God to play with me as he sees fit. He has big plans. I just love what I get to do.
