Andy Gold is a Stand-Up Recovery Comedian and He Rules: A Peek into the Mind of a Recovery Comedian

Andy Gold is a stand-up comedian. He rules. His jokes are totally sweet and way rad. A lot of times, after his shows, people say “Man that dude’s jokes were totally sweet and way rad.” He got his start in Utah and quickly became a club regular at 3 different clubs. All of which are owned by the same dude and all called Wiseguys. This afforded Andy the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in the business and promptly ruin their shows. It was awesome. After just a few months, Andy began featuring on the road at various cow towns throughout the mountain west. In less than 2 years, he began headlining at prestigious venues like active seniors communities and bowling alleys.

Andy also continued to do a lot of comedy at home and word spread quickly of his sweet jokes. He was soon featured in various news programs, papers, local TV shows, radio shows and virtually every other media outlet in the mecca of entertainment that is Salt Lake.
After a while, Andy grew tired of being a well-liked and supported local comedian and moved to New York where he currently performs stand-up comedy and lives in a studio apartment in Brooklyn that smells like a gas station mop.

Recovery Comedy: What were you like as a kid?

Andy Gold: I hated school and had a short attention span. I resented authority and didn’t understand the kids who were teachers pets or “goodie goodies”. My grades suffered and I was always getting into trouble. As far back as I can remember, I was the “bad kid.” I was basically the stereotypical troubled kid from 1980’s after school specials.

Recovery Comedy: What made you decide to become a stand-up comedian and how long have you been performing?

Andy Gold: In the treatment center I went to, I had a couple hours of free time a week and the only available channel was Comedy Central. I remember watching stand-up a lot and developing an interest. I tried stand-up after I got out of treatment. I sucked. I returned and continued to suck. I eventually improved and today, I strive to suck as little as possible.

Recovery Comedy: Were you performing stand-up comedy before you got into recovery?

Andy Gold: No. My life was a pit of despair void of laughter.

Recovery Comedy: Does your comedy have a message and if so what is it?

Andy Gold: I’m not sure. I’ve never really thought about that. I suppose the message behind my act is the world is full of harsh truths and it’s ok to laugh at them. Man, I sound deep.

Recovery Comedy: Who are your comedy idols?

Andy Gold: Mitch Hedberg, Rodney Dangerfield. I love jokes and those guys had ’em.

Recovery Comedy: Where does your inspiration for material come from?

Andy Gold: My own life. I watch the news and pay attention to politics (kinda) but really, my act comes from my life. Especially from my past.

Recovery Comedy: What is your joke writing process?

Andy Gold: I usually type on a computer but sometimes, I use a pen and a pad. That’s what you meant right?

Recovery Comedy: What is your kryptonite?

Andy Gold: Fat skanks.

Recovery Comedy: Is your family supportive of your comedy career?

Andy Gold: Yes, but then again, I suppose they’ll take anything over my old life of pawning granny’s jewels to buy heroin.

Recovery Comedy: Is comedy part of your healing process?

Andy Gold: Yes, definitely. Although at times, I think “damage control” is a more suitable term.

Recovery Comedy: What was your worst experience performing comedy?

Andy Gold: Ugghhh…I want to puke just thinking about it. I was the emcee for a heavy metal showcase. It was in a trash bag, hole-in-the-wall lounge that was full of drunken vagrants who all hated me. After I finished the gig, I was asked if it was ok if they paid me in Marlboros. The high point of the evening was when a green-toothed troll who smelled like bar smoke and pancakes told me I was “Pretty cute for being a fat goof.”

Recovery Comedy: What was your best experience performing comedy?

Andy Gold: My last show back home before moving to New York. The place was sold out and I got a standing-ovation. It was totally undeserved but nonetheless, very, very cool.

Recovery Comedy: What is your favorite joke?

Andy Gold: “When I was born, the doctor said we did all we could but he pulled through anyway.” – Rodney Dangerfield

Recovery Comedy: What is your comedy dream?

Andy Gold: To become rich and famous and score with a lot of babes.
