Douglas MacArthur attended West Point and became a war hero. Dwight David Eisenhower attended West Point and became the President of the United States. Ross Bennett attended West Point and became …. A COMEDIAN????
The late 70’s were a different era, and West Point admitted a different kind of cadet when Ross Bennett was sworn in on July 8, 1975. But by 1977 Ross had decided that he wanted to take aim and fire jokes at nightclub audiences. So he undertook a giant career change, he dropped out of West Point, and landed right square in the middle of the comedy explosion that was taking America by storm.
For 25 years Ross has led a comedy attack. Armed with an expressive delivery and real life topics. Growing up with a Marine Colonel father (a nice mellow guy!), grade school snow days, disastrous golf games, and catastrophic water skiing outings. ROSS BENNETT is a high-powered performer who takes his act to the audience and comes back with a victory every-time!!
Ross has been seen on COMEDY CENTRAL’S TOUGH CROWD w/ COLIN QUINN as well as 2004 JUST FOR LAUGH’S COMEDY FESTVAL, 2003 SMIRNOFF COMEDY FESTIVAL CAPETOWN SOUTH AFRICA
2003, and the BOSTON COMEDY FESTIVAL.
Recovery Comedy: What were you like as a kid?
Ross Bennett: I was the skinniest weakest kid in the class, slowest runner, last picked for all sporting events. I compensated by trying to be funny, but I think I was really just obnoxious
Recovery Comedy: What made you decide to become a stand-up comedian and how long have you been performing?
Ross Bennett: It seemed to be something I always wanted to do. But when SNL started up and Steve Martin was the biggest star in the country I just felt I had to give it a try. If they could do it why not me?
Recovery Comedy: Were you performing stand-up comedy before you got into recovery?
Ross Bennett: I did my first show in 1975, quit everything else and started to pursue it full time in 1978. I started trying to get Clean and sober in 1982. My sobriety date is 6/18/87.
Recovery Comedy: Does your comedy have a message and if so what is it?
Ross Bennett: No real message, I just do the stuff that I think is funny, it is what entertains me.
Recovery Comedy: Who are your comedy idols?
Ross Bennett: Carlin, Pryor, Steve Martin, Woody Allen, Johnny Carson, Jack Benny
Recovery Comedy: Where does your inspiration for material come from?
Ross Bennett: It’s all based on things that I find funny and then I try and make an audience see what I saw that was funny to begin with.
Recovery Comedy: What is your joke writing process?
Ross Bennett: I think if I had a better process I would probably be more successful.
Recovery Comedy: What is your kryptonite?
Ross Bennett: Kryptonite is actually my Kryptonite
Recovery Comedy: Is comedy part of your healing process?
Ross Bennett: I think performing is more of part of my breathing process.
Recovery Comedy: What was your worst experience performing comedy?
Ross Bennett: Being booed off the stage is about as bad as it gets, but I did a show once and a drunk was removed from the room and he started fighting the bouncer. He went crazy, threw chairs, 1/2 of the audience walked out and the club never hired me again
Recovery Comedy: What was your best experience performing comedy?
Ross Bennett: Standing ovations are always nice.
Recovery Comedy: What is your comedy dream?
Ross Bennett: Would love to have my own talk show.
Recovery Comedy: Thanks for sharing with us. We look forward to seeing you on stage soon.
